Govt mulls emergency onion import
The government is planning to import onion from alternative source in a bid to reduce its price.
To implement the plan, the Commerce Ministry has directed traders to import onion from Egypt, Thailand and China except India on an emergency basis.
The decision came at an emergency meeting in the secretariat on Monday with Commerce Ministry Additional Secretary Shamima Yeasmin in the chair.
The main source of onion is India but the production of onion in India and Bangladesh has been severely damaged due to flood and heavy rain. That’s why the price of onion has increased. To meet the demand, a decision has been taken to import onion from alternative source, Shamima Yeasmin said.
The government is taking effective steps so that the price of onion comes down soon, she added.
